Story Excavation: How To Tell Stories That Connect, Transport, & Transform

Have you ever gotten tongue tied when introducing yourself, stumped when trying to write your about me page, or caught in an endless loop of word vomit and explaining instead of being able to articulate what you do or who you really are?  I don’t think you struggle to tell those stories because of your lack of story ability. I believe you struggle because you don’t really understand where you are on your journey.

A few years ago, I did an epic trek to Mustang in Nepal. Mustang means “Plain of Aspiration” and it’s one of the most remote areas of the country. This wild trek is a vast and arid valley filled with eroded canyons, colorful rock formations and barren high-altitude deserts.  We’ll just say that it was certainly aspirational of me to think I could climb from from about 1,300 to 3,600+ meters with a group of very fit people.

I was by far the slowest hiker in our group but my faithful guide Kopil never left my side. He often tried to encourage me by pointing out where we going that day and by having me eat lots of dhal bat for strength.

After the first few days of climbing, I learned to ask a different question. Instead of asking where we were going, I’d ask, “How many ups and how many downs do you think we’ll have today?” Kopil did his best to prepare me for the day ahead and understanding where I was on the journey was the key to my making the climb.

Most of the people I work with aren’t really stuck on telling their story, They’re stuck at a specific point in their experience. A point that was significant for them and now holds major influence over how they think, believe, and act. It can feel like they can’t get past that point in the story or that the point is the whole story. In storytelling, identifying the places where you’re stuck can you keep moving to the next mountain top.

I created this free audio training because I want to help you orient yourself in your personal storytelling landscape.
