A husband and wife wait at a cash distribution site near Jacmel, Haiti.

Moti Maya was only seventeen when she experienced her first earthquake¬, an 8.4M shock that struck Nepal on January 15, 1934. Eighty-one years later, her home was destroyed by the recent massive quake in 2015 that also killed four people in her small village. After two months of living in the destruction with very little food, Maya Moti left everything she knew and went by helicopter to start a new life in Dhola.
She spent the last year living in a tent, but her spirit remains strong and positive. While she confirms that nothing remains for her family in their old village, she finds all these changes in her life exciting. She expects she will die soon but is pleased that her daughter, son, and grandchildren will now have a safe place to call home in Dhola.
Moti Maya’s wish is that her community will live in harmony while undertaking their project of building their fifty-five new homes.

Peace Ruzage was born in Rwanda but fled to Kenya with her family when she was quite young. As an adult, she returned to her home country following Rwanda’s 1994 genocide. In three months, 800,000 people were killed; more than half a million women and girls were raped, and thousands of children were orphaned.
After returning, Peace opened up her home as a meeting place for women to share ideas and build a community. Many of the women were widows, single mothers, illiterate, HIV-positive and other vulnerable groups. Soon there were over 300 women socializing at her home daily. There were a great number of jobless widows and single mothers in the area who lacked skills and education to provide for themselves and their families.
Peace explained that these women needed inspiration and job skills. She began to teach them to make beads from waste paper, while her mother taught them to read and write. While making minor steps in helping them with their lives, Peace spent a great deal of time learning what women needed to create live better lives.
In 2009, she partnered with Network for Africa to create Aspire Rwanda. Aspire Rwanda started a yearlong training program to teach women vocational skills in things like hairdressing, baking, and agriculture. Women take weekly classes in literacy and numeracy. They also attend workshops on nutrition, health, family planning, and women’s rights. Aspire Rwanda also provides a safe, healthy learning environment for their young children. Peace looked at what a woman needs to succeed and created a space where it could happen.
Aspire Rwanda improves 220 women’s lives every year. Since its founding, 1,544 women have completed the training program. Peace created more than just a job training program; she created a space that fundamentally understands what Rwandan women need to succeed.

Emerance Unirajiye’s son Blaze Ishimwe was born with a cleft pallet. Blaze is a joy to Emerance. However, in Rwanda – where it is culturally important for women to give birth to their first child within the first year of marriage – issues with childbearing or severe health issues are often blamed on the mother.
Emerance’s in-laws blamed her for the child’s facial malformation. Her husband left her and she was ostracized from her community. It was a very difficult time in her life. However, she said it all turned around when Blaze received facial surgery from Smile Train.
Emerance also received training, childcare, and several goats from Action Aid. Her fields did very well and she began to prosper. She reunited with her husband and had the financial resources to take in her younger brother. She is proud of all she accomplished but is even more proud of Blaze and how he has overcome the obstacles in his life. She believes that he will grow up to be a very important person.

Theogine Ntacumura and his wife Ernistine discuss their hopes and dreams for their children. They hope that they can finish their education and possibly become doctors one day. Theogine is a member of the young men’s group of Mencare. He says that he didn’t know anything about child or maternal care until he joined the group because men don’t usually help with child care tasks in Rwanda.
